happyMany people spend over half of their waking days in the workplace, yet according to a 2013 Gallup study, which reported data from more than 180 million people, only 13% consider themselves to be “happily engaged at work.”  Those who do rate themselves as happy are said to be 36% more motivated, six times more energized, and twice as productive as their unhappy counterparts.

 

Interestingly research has it that approximately 50% of your happiness is said to be influenced by your genes, the other 50% can be controlled by YOU! That means staying happy all week long at work is not beyond your control.

When it comes to making yourself happy, you need to learn what works for you; making it a goal to improve and stay happy at work is a choice and a decision you can make.  A Happy work life doesn’t just improve your performance; it’s also good for your health and relationships, with your entire life reaping the benefits of your positive perspective towards happiness in the workplace. So after going through a number of articles on this I zeroed on this list of ten (10) things you should do to ensure a happy work life:

 

  1. Develop a task list of what you intend to accomplish

Starting your week with a task list has a way of making you feel prepared for your week. You can get down to doing this as part of your task a day before your weekend starts, ensuring you give yourself the break you need before the next week . There are great softwares that you can use to schedule task such as To-do-list.

  1. Start each week day with some time to yourself

Start each work week at least an hour earlier to give you some personal time before rush time! It could be to read, settle down to a breakfast, or a quiet spiritual exercise or meditation, just to relax before starting on your daily task.

  1. Stay focused on accomplishing your task listcontro

Avoid multitasking without accomplishing any specific task on your list! Start with your to-do-list, resist the urge to panic when the time allotted to a particular task is fast spent and the task is yet to be accomplished.

 

  1. Don’t get grieve over things outside your control

Staying positive and not grieving over things outside your control, allows you handle situations calmly. It is important you stay on top of things without focusing on things you cannot directly change.

  1. Don’t compare yourself to others

Staying positive about your aspirations and self is very important. Your co-workers or peers are peculiar in their rights just as you are. So it’s important you stay focused on what you intend to achieve with comparerespect to your goals, without having to place yourself in a competitive space with others especially when they have no direct bearing with your life visions.

  1. Stay away from Negative People!

There are people who are natural pessimist and complain and see no way out of situations. They have ways of rubbing off on others. It is important you stay away from such people if you want to keep yourself in your happy mode.

  1. Be helpful and Respectful

This is exactly how you expect to be treated, and since this makes you happy, giving this back to others, whether co-workers, staff, employees or customers will definitely give you a sense of worth and happiness. However, this doesn’t take away the part of being firm when you have to.wexercise

  1. Exercise as much as you can

It is important you cultivate a habit of getting out of a stationary work position every day. There are a number of things you can do to improve the amount of physical activity you can do during your work day; being more physically active will make you feel more energized and happier. It could be something as simple as taking a walk to get your coffee instead of being served!

  1. Learn to reward yourself

You can schedule a happy hour at work after a series of what you know will be stressful meetings. You can enjoy a sugar cookie after teaching two of your hardest classes. Find whatever motivates you to get your work done and use it as a reward after a hard day. For me I love to treat myself to a movie, after turning in a long awaited report or document!

  1. Be conscious that you owe yourself the choice of HAPPINESS

Remind yourself of this anytime you’re feeling overwhelmed. You are responsible for your happiness and owe yourself that choice to make- YES you can have a happy work life!
